Why Affirmations Don’t Always Work (and What To Do Instead)

We’ve all heard it: Say affirmations every day and your life will change.

Maybe you’ve tried it. You stood in front of the mirror, saying:

  • “I am healthy.”
  • “I am abundant.”
  • “I am loved.”

And yet, nothing seemed to shift. Or maybe it worked for a little while, until old patterns, doubts, or heaviness crept back in.

So why don’t affirmations always work? And what can you do differently to make them truly powerful?

Affirmations Are Like Seeds

Imagine you have a packet of beautiful flower or vegetable seeds. You want to grow a lush garden.

But the ground is rock hard. The soil is dry and compacted. If you throw the seeds on top, will they sprout? Maybe a few, but most will struggle or wither.

Affirmations are like those seeds. They hold so much potential, but if your inner ground (your body, your beliefs, your unconscious memories) is tight, blocked, or weighed down by old pain, there’s nowhere for them to grow.

This is why affirmations often don’t work for most people. It’s not that they’re “bad” or “fake”,  it’s that the soil hasn’t been prepared yet.

Preparing the Soil

Before seeds can flourish, the soil must be softened. Gardeners dig, loosen, compost and water. Only then can the seeds truly take root.

It’s the same with affirmations. If deep inside there are voices saying:

  • “You’ve always been unhealthy.”
  • “You’ll never have enough.”
  • “You don’t deserve love.”

Then repeating “I am healthy / wealthy / loved” can feel like plastering flowers on concrete.

Sometimes these old beliefs don’t even come just from us, they can be inherited, carried from family patterns, or even from past lives and they bounce off.

When you soften the inner ground, through self-reflection, emotional release, or even healing they suddenly have somewhere to land.

My Story: When Affirmations Felt Like a Lie

When I first started using affirmations I was hopeful that they would help me. However, as I was repeating them, deep inside, I didn’t believe a single word. My body would tighten. My chest would feel heavy. After weeks of trying, I grew frustrated.

I remember thinking: It doesn’t work. So I stopped using affirmations.

But over time, I began to understand: it wasn’t the affirmations that were the problem,  it was the soil they were landing on. My inner ground was still full of old pain, trauma, and beliefs that said the opposite of what I was trying to affirm.

Once I began releasing and softening inside, affirmations started to feel different.

A Gentle Practice to Try

Here’s a simple way to begin softening the “soil” before you use affirmations.

  1. Choose an affirmation. For example, “I am safe,” or “I am worthy of abundance.”
  2. Notice your body. As you say it, pause and feel: Where does it land? Does it feel true? Or does tension, heaviness, or resistance show up.
  3. Put your hand there. Rest your hand gently on the part of your body where you feel the resistance.
  4. Ask and release. Whisper to that place: “Do you want to let go?” If you feel a “yes,” take a deep breath in and slowly exhale, imagining the old energy leaving your body
  5. Repeat softly. Try your affirmation again and see if it feels a little lighter.

This is a simple way of preparing the ground for your affirmations to truly grow.
